The productivity gap between a marketer who prompts well and one who prompts poorly is around 3x on AI-friendly tasks. Prompt engineering is not code, it's structured writing. Techniques a B2B marketing team can learn in 5-10 hours that multiply generative AI effectiveness.
Technique 1 — Context before instruction
LLMs produce better answers when given context before the request. Bad prompt: "Write an outbound email". Good prompt: "I am [role] in [industry], addressing [persona] who suffers from [problem]. My product X solves [specific aspect]. Write an 80-word outbound email with hook + value prop + CTA." Context makes the difference between generic and exploitable output.
Technique 2 — Explicit output format
Specify the expected format: "Answer in 5 bullet points, each max 20 words" rather than "List benefits". For structured content: "JSON format with fields title, body, tags". This precision reduces post-edit work by 40-60 %.
